Gearbox Software is an American game developer company that is founded in February 1999 in Texas. The founder who is the current president and CEO is Randy Pitchford. Their famous products they have developed were Brothers in Arms and Borderlands.

History[]

Humble Beginnings[]

Gearbox was founded by 5 developers from a former game developer called Rebel Boat Rocker. The developers name were Randy Pitchford, Brian Martel, Stephen Bahl, Landon Montgomery and Rob Heironimus. Their main focuses before Brothers in Arms series was developing expansions and ports from other games.

Their first games they have developed were the expansions of Half-Life for the Sierra Studios, Half Life's publisher and also responsible for the porting to other consoles. They also helped improved Counter Strike, a series branching out from Half-Life.

In 2005, they developed their original game, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 with the help of historical advisor, John Antal. The game receive positive acclaim.

They release a new sequel in the same year, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood although they wanted it as a DLC. They also developed some other console versions of Brothers in Arms like the DS and D-Day.

In September 2008 as part of Operation Market Garden anniversary, they released Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway with new graphics, features and story to show. Like its predecessors, it receives positive reviews on the game.

New Series and Some Failures[]

After releasing Hell's Highway, they start to develop a new game called Borderlands which focused on action roleplaying game in Wild West style. It sold well and becomes a popular series as time comes.

They soon start buying franchises to expand their company including Duke Nukem series and Aliens movies. They start developing a final installment of Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem Forever. However, upon its release, it receive negative criticism of being a rushed state and unfinished game, it still manage to earn a profit.

They also start developing Aliens: Colonial Marines but there are rumors spreading that the game is outsourced to other developers secretly and most of the Gearbox teams are sent to develop Borderlands and Duke Nukem, yet still collecting Sega payments without the publisher notified. The rushed state of the game by other developers cause the game to have negative reviews and lawsuit by players.
