Major Thomas Bastion is a recurring, minor character in Brothers in Arms 3: Sons of War. Bastion is Cole's superior and often tasks Cole's squad with missions to ensure small victories within World War II.

Personality

Bastion is hard-working and very loyal to the army. He appears to be a kind and caring person, but remains serious throughout the events of the series. He is rather reserved, and prefers to keep things constantly professional, not personal. An example of him doing this was when he told Cole about Sam Foster double crossing them in Chapter 6, Mission 1: The Mole. Cole told the Major about how Foster saved him in Italy in 1944, but Bastion cuts him off quickly, knowing how hard feelings can cloud judgement.

He is very intelligent, as he often guides Cole's squad to multiple victories. Cole notes that in the 2 years he'd been under his command, Bastion rarely loses his temper. However. there are a few occasions where he lashes out. A notable time was in Campaign 8, where he screams, "That son of a bitch!" when he'd found out that General Herst had escaped to Denmark, while angrily flipping over his desk.

Despite this, he showcases a softer side: in the Campaign 8 mission, Welcome Blast, he flips over his table, sending his items flying throughout his office. One of these items included a framed photo of an unnamed woman, and other items that hold sentiment.

Game Appearances

Major Bastion usually appears in cutscenes or on the radio laying out instructions for Cole and his squad on their objectives.

Chapter 1

Major Bastion appears in the third mission, "Final Defense" on the radio informing Cole and Jacob Hall on a parachuted crate supplies near a Nazi tank.

Dialogue:
"We've parachuted a crate of supplies in case you need to take that tank head-on!"

Chapter 2

Major Bastion appears at the first mission, "Quick Steal" on the radio, informing Cole that he needs to commandeer an enemy vehicle to move as fast possible; ordering him to give his squad some cover while they commandeer the vehicle.

Dialogue:
"Wright, you'll need to commandeer an enemy vehicle to move as fast as possible, give the boys some cover while they get it."

Chapter 3

Major Bastion appears at the first mission, "Monte Cassino" where he orders Cole to rescue a group of captured US Soldiers including Cain Lawrence who has information that is key to Cole's mission and tells there is a rumor going on that General Herst is possibly in the area.

Dialogue:
"Wright, a group of our men are being held captive. Our first priority is to rescue them. Cain Lawrence has information that's key to our mission. Rumor has it General Herst is in the location. Keep your eyes peeled."

Chapter 4

Major Bastion appears at the first mission, "No Signal" where he orders Cole to destroy the enemy's communication network and divert their convoy.

Dialogue:
"First thing first, you need to take down their communication network. Then find some way to divert their convoy. I'm depending on you, Wright."

Chapter 5

Major Bastion appears at the first mission, "La Ville Lumiére" where he informs Cole of the several enemy vehicles between him and the facility, he then orders them to plant some delayed explosives to lure out the first wave."

Dialogue:
"There's several enemy vehicles between you and the facility. Plant some delayed explosives to lure out the first wave of defense. After that you're good to go."

Chapter 6

Major Bastion appears in a cutscene at the first mission, "The Mole" where he informs that Sam Foster, a US soldier who helped rescue Cole when he was temporarily captured in Italy was secretly helping the Nazis after being turned by them during his brief captivity during Operation Torch in 1942, and has been giving them key strategic information for months. Bastion tells Cole to put aside his personal feelings and to assassinate Foster.

Dialogue exchange between Major Bastion and Cole Wright:
Major Bastion: "Sam Foster. Took part in Operation Torch in 1942... where he was briefly captured..."
Cole Wright: "I know him... Italy..."
[Cole has a flashback to Italy in his captivity and when he was rescued by Foster]
Major Bastion: "Wright... Listen."
Major Bastion: "We believe during Foster's captivity, the enemy somehow turned him."

Chapter 7

Major Bastion appears in a cutscene at the first mission, "The Facility" where he narrates that the Nazis know that they are fighting a losing battle but is now trying to inflict as much civilian damage as possible and informs about a key weapons facility and it's up to Cole's squad to take it down.

Dialogue:
"Knowing they're fighting a losing battle, the enemy is now trying to inflict - as much civilian damage as possible"
"We are talking about innocent lives here, soldiers."
"Women and children."
"We've located a key vengance-weapon facility."
"It's up to you to take it down."

Chapter 8

Major Bastion appears in a cutscene at the first mission, "Welcome Blast" where he angrily flips his office's desk table and shouts "That son of a bitch!" after being informed of General Herst's escape to Denmark. After that, he orders for Cole to secure a base in Denmark awaiting Herst's arrival by taking down their warning and communication systems and to get his hands on some explosives to ambush Herst's convoy..

Cutscene Dialogue:
"That son of a bitch!"

Radio Dialogue:
"You need to secure the area before Herst arrives, Wright."
"First, take down their warning and communication systems. Then get your hands on some explosives. You'll need them for the ambush. Good luck."

Physical Appearance

Despite his age, he is good shape. Bastion is a lean, tall man, with blonde-grey hair. He is usually seen wearing an Army Major Hat, a dark green jacket, and dark green ACU trousers. He finishes the look with a brown leather vest, where there is a holster strapped to his chest. Bastion has thin eyebrows, and a light chevron moustache.

Skills

Tracker: Bastion is a skilled tracker, as he spends majority of the series tracking down General Herst, with almost little to no difficulty.

Strategic Skill: As the Major, Bastion is an exceptionally skilled tactician with great observation skills, and superb capacity for planning for the long term before acting. Unlike Herst, he only uses violence as a last resort after thinking things through.
